What Is a Skid Steer? A skid steer is a compact, engine-powered machine with lift arms that support a wide range of attachments. Its name comes from its unique steering mechanism—each side’s wheels or tracks operate independently, allowing the machine to “skid” or pivot in place. This gives it exceptional maneuverability, especially in tight spaces. There are two main types: Wheeled: Ideal for hard surfaces like concrete or asphalt. Tracked (also called compact track loaders): Better suited for muddy, uneven terrain. What Can They Be Used For? Skid steers are incredibly useful thanks to their quick-attach system that allows operators to swap out attachments in minutes. Here are some of the most common applications:  Construction Digging trenches Grading and leveling Demolition with hydraulic breakers Material transport with buckets or pallet forks  Landscaping Soil tilling Brush clearing Stump grinding Sod installation  Agriculture Moving hay bales Feeding livestock Clearing manure Fence post installation  Snow Removal Plowing driveways and parking lots Snow blowing with specialized attachments  Specialty Tasks Roadwork and forestry Indoor demolition Site cleanup and debris hauling Why Are They So Popular? Their compact size, maneuverability, and ability to handle over 200 different attachments make skid steers a go-to solution for contractors, farmers, and landscapers alike. They’re also relatively easy to operate, with modern models offering joystick controls and enclosed cabs... --- - Published: 2025-10-03 - Modified: 2025-10-03 - URL: https://console.4riversequipment.com/colorado-assembly-members-visit-colorado-springs/ Our Colorado Springs 4Rivers Equipment location welcomed Colorado Assembly members Mary Bradfield (R) and Amy Paschal (D) to the branch on Friday, Sept. 26, giving them both an inside look at the essential role equipment dealers play in supporting the state’s infrastructure, economy and workforce. Here are some essential preventative maintenance tips for compact track loaders to help extend the life of your equipment and avoid costly downtime: Inspect the Undercarriage Daily Look for excessive wear, debris buildup, or loose track tension. Clean out mud, rocks, and other materials that can damage components. Compact track loaders can suffer if maintenance is overlooked. Check Fluid Levels Monitor engine oil, hydraulic fluid, coolant, and fuel daily. Top off fluids as needed and watch for signs of leaks. It's crucial for compact track loaders to keep fluid levels in check. Grease All Fittings Lubricate pivot points and joints regularly to reduce friction and wear. Use manufacturer-recommended grease and follow the service schedule for optimal performance of your compact track loaders. Clean or Replace Air Filters Dirty filters reduce engine efficiency and can lead to overheating. Inspect and clean filters frequently, especially in dusty environments. Inspect Hydraulic Hoses and Connections Look for cracks, leaks, or loose fittings. Replace damaged hoses immediately to prevent system failure. Monitor Track Tension Proper tension prevents premature wear and improves traction. Adjust according to manufacturer specifications. Keep the Radiator and Cooling System Clean Remove debris and dirt to prevent overheating. Check coolant levels and flush the system as recommended. Review the Operator’s Manual Follow the maintenance schedule and guidelines specific to your model. Stay informed about service intervals and best practices. Over time, the mission expanded to include food waste composting—an essential service for New Mexico’s dry, alkaline soils. Composting with purpose is crucial for enhancing the soil quality in Santa Fe. “We recognized that there was a need locally here in Santa Fe to keep food waste out of the landfill, and instead convert that into compost,” said Trevor Ortiz, operations manager for Reunity Resources. Today, the company collects food waste from restaurants, schools, and other businesses, transforming it into nutrient-rich compost. Composting with purpose in Santa Fe helps reduce water usage as well. “Compost has an amazing water retention or water holding capacity,” Trevor explained. “So that can reduce our use locally on water and help save that water and keep it in the soil where we need it most. Operating on one acre, Reunity diverts 1. 5 million pounds of food waste annually. Their composting process blends food waste with mulch or manure. This maintains 68% moisture and uses aerated static pile and traditional windrow techniques. Front-end loaders mix and move the material to create a uniform product. ” Reunity's Working Partner For the past eight years, Reunity has relied on John Deere equipment from 4Rivers. A Partnership Rooted in Shared Values The relationship between AUI and 4Rivers Equipment dates to the early 1980s. The ELC recently organized a volunteer effort at Easterseals’ Rocky Mountain Village, a summer camp facility that serves individuals with disabilities with “life-changing outdoor experiences,” according to a CCA news release. RodRadar's innovative Live Dig Radar® (LDR) technology is setting new standards by integrating advanced radar technology directly into an excavator's digging bucket. This groundbreaking (pun intended) approach allows operators to detect underground utilities in real-time, significantly reducing the risk of costly and dangerous utility strikes. The core of this technology lies in its simplicity and effectiveness. Traditional methods often involve manual potholing or using cart-mounted radar systems, which can be time-consuming and less precise. RodRadar's LDR technology, however, empowers operators to control their excavation process with greater confidence and accuracy. With just a single button, the system scans the ground and displays potential detections on an intuitive tablet interface, making it accessible even to those with limited training.   User-Friendly "It's one button, sets the bucket on the ground, and drags it across the ground. Then it kicks out a display of what could be under the ground," notes Mike Sydow from FourSight Solutions. Mike was on site to talk about the tech at a recent demo at the Colorado Springs 4Rivers Equipment location. One of the standout features of the LDR system is its ability to perform both linear and circular scans. This offers flexibility depending on the excavation needs. The system processes scan data in real-time, presenting it in a user-friendly format that highlights solid objects and potential utilities. Experienced operators can delve deeper into the raw data, identifying specific... --- - Published: 2025-01-24 - Modified: 2025-01-24 - URL: https://console.4riversequipment.com/4rivers-national-western-stock-show/ A Colorado Tradition The National Western Stock Show (NWSS) is an annual Colorado tradition, taking place this year for sixteen days between January 11th to the 26th. The NWSS hosts nationally recognized professional rodeo events, horse shows, and livestock exhibitions just to name a few highlights, and attendance each year verges on the 700,000-visitor mark. 4Rivers Equipment was proud to once again be a part of the NWSS, not only by showcasing some of our John Deere machines on the event grounds, but also by partnering with junior market exhibitor, Cal Sidwell, as he made his journey to showing his lambs at the Junior Market Lamb Show on Wednesday, January 16th.   4Rivers won the bid for the “partner experience” with Cal at the Colorado Future Farmers of America (FFA) Meat & Greet event back in November and kept us up to date on his progress between the auction and the NWSS itself. Cal is a very busy guy and recently notched his 100th high school win in wrestling, all the while preparing diligently for the NWSS with three lambs: Parker, Cael and Keegan. Cal said the day-to-day of these three is just as eventful as his days at school. “First, they get their breakfast at 7:30 in the morning, then on the weekends I exercise them at 10:30," Cal said. To paint a picture of how desperate the situation really is, over 80 positions are currently available at one single company in the area. The need for skilled operators is starkly evident. However, there was no local training available—until now. Introducing the San Juan College Heavy Equipment Operator Program Patrick Smith, an instructor for the San Juan College Heavy Equipment Operator Program, is looking to help fill those aforementioned openings.   “We started a year and a half, two years ago, with the concept of putting together a heavy equipment school,” Smith recalls. “The demand in our region was clear, and we aimed to fill that gap. ” Training for the Future The heavy equipment operator program is designed specifically to train entry-level operators. Over the course of the program, students are ensured they’ll gain valuable hands-on experience. “When they’re done with this program, they’re going to have the credentials as an entry-level operator on different pieces of equipment,” Smith says. “It’s a start. It’s a way to get their foot in the door. ” Partnership with 4Rivers Equipment 4Rivers became a crucial partner in helping to build the heavy equipment operator program.   “They’ve been fantastic to us. Walking around the new Grand Junction High School, you can still see the remnants of the previous building in your periphery. This modern structure stands in stark contrast to the old school, established 70 years ago, constructed on unstable ground, and in the final throes of deterioration. “It was a very well-built building, but what we’re finding out is that it was just built on a ‘marshmallow,’” says Blake Kelleher, minority owner of Skyline Contracting in Grand Junction, Colorado. “If you walk around it, you can see all the waves of the building and everything else. It’s pretty scary that we had kids in it for as long as we did. ” The new Grand Junction High School is a marvel of modern architecture and engineering, designed to last for at least the next 100 years according to Kelleher. The new school has also already helped to balance student populations across the district, preventing overcrowding in other schools.   John Deere Technology One of the significant improvements in the new school is the use of John Deere’s advanced technology in its construction. For instance, the dozers used for grading the site come with Deere’s SmartGrade technology and GPS, making the process much more efficient. John Deere’s technology allows for precise grading, saving time and reducing the need for manual labor. The efficiency gains are substantial, with tasks that used to take days now taking a fraction of the time. " In the world of heavy machinery, innovation and maintenance sometimes go hand in hand. 4Rivers has recently embarked on a journey to breathe new life into equipment that has already undergone long hours of use, and the results have been nothing short of remarkable. These projects have been dubbed “RELIFE” transformations. Rich Jeanblanc, Service Manager at 4Rivers in Colorado Springs, happened to know of some potential machines that could use the RELIFE treatment.  "Have you ever considered a RELIFE? Encouraged by this success, they decided to take on a new challenge: a 624J loader. Challenge Accepted Bradley purchased the loader back in 2006, and since then it has clocked in an impressive 12,000 hours of work. Spearheading this project is service technician Tyler Bretz, a native of Greeley, Colorado. Tyler's journey with 4Rivers Equipment began in 2022, initially in agriculture before transitioning to construction. The decision to become a technician stemmed from his lifelong passion for working on his own vehicles, nurtured further during an internship with 4Rivers Equipment during high school. It was a natural fit. For Tyler, this project marks his first experience with a relife, and he couldn't be more thrilled. "The relife has been one of the best experiences I've had," Tyler expressed. "It's given me the opportunity to dive into every aspect of the machine. The lessons learned here will stick with me and streamline my future tasks. The next time an 844K comes through, I'll be equipped to guide someone through the process. " Tyler values the collaborative spirit within his team, emphasizing their readiness to assist whenever required. "What I like most about the team here in Fort Collins is how everyone is willing to help when needed," he shared. As a technician, Tyler finds the daily learning process to be the most rewarding aspect of his job. "My favorite aspect about being a technician is being able to learn every day," he noted. The project is estimated to be concluded on June 14 and will result in a full transformation of the machine, making it as good as new. Led by technicians Zachary Mees and Tomas Montoya and overseen by Shop Foreman Kenny Kroschel, the project aims to revitalize the 9520 Scraper Tractor to its former glory. Upon arrival at the workshop, the tractor will undergo disassembly, stripping down to its bare frame. This phase facilitates a thorough inspection and deep cleaning of the frame, followed by essential touch-ups. Next, they will replace all core components and mandatory replacements, as prescribed by Deere, include remanufactured engine, transmission, front and rear axles, and hydraulic pumps. Additionally, Fiore & Sons, Inc. has opted for the renewal of wiring harnesses, hydraulic and rubber hoses, fuel tanks, interior panels, and a transition to LED lights for enhanced illumination. They will also install a weight bracket integrated over the rear axle. This will relieve the weight that normally sits on the rims, increasing the longevity of the machine. The decision to pursue a Relife stems from the transmission failure encountered by the 9520 Scraper Tractor. Presented with the prospect of a Relife, Fiore & Sons, Inc. chose this route over acquiring a new tractor, thereby optimizing cost-effectiveness. Moreover, the Relife initiative serves to mitigate potential issues observed in their final tier 4 fleet, ensuring sustained operational... --- - Published: 2024-04-22 - Modified: 2024-05-02 - URL: https://console.4riversequipment.com/celebrating-commitment-justin-crowder-earns-4rivers-equipment-challenge-coin/ 4Rivers Equipment, a leading provider of John Deere construction equipment, recently honored Justin Crowder of Hobbs, New Mexico, with a challenge coin—a special recognition reserved for those who go above and beyond to exemplify the company's core values. All that is left is to remove the axles and wiring harness and hoses," Fort Collins service manager George Tyler said. Following disassembly, the next phase involves dry ice blasting to remove grease and dirt from the frame, followed by painting. The machine then undergoes reassembly, including the rebuilding of articulation pins and bushings. Central to the relife process is the installation of remanufactured engine, hydraulic pump, and transmission, ensuring optimal performance. Within the in-cab display, operators gain a broader perspective and enhanced clarity thanks to the integrated view from all cameras. John Deere's SmartDetect system is another remarkable addition. Combining cameras with machine learning provides operators with an improved view of their surroundings. When an object enters the machine's projected travel path, the system issues alerts. It also offers unique detection alerts when people are within the camera's field of view. With SmartDetect Assist, the machine automatically halts its movement when it detects a person nearby, enhancing safety on the worksite. For customers, taking advantage of Section 179 can lead to substantial tax savings, improved cash flow, and the opportunity to invest in their businesses. The deadline for Section 179 tax deductions in 2023 is December 31, 2023. To take full advantage of this tax incentive, ensure that your purchases are made and placed into service by the end of the year. Section 179 allows businesses to deduct the entire purchase price of new and used equipment up to $2. 8 million, acquired in 2023. This substantial deduction can significantly reduce your taxable income, leading to lower tax liabilities and enhanced financial flexibility. Investopedia defines Section 179 as an immediate expense deduction that businesses can claim for purchases of depreciable business equipment, instead of spreading the deduction over time. This means that if you purchase or finance equipment, you can potentially deduct the full purchase price in the year it is placed in service, providing a substantial tax benefit. Taking the immediate expense deduction approach allows businesses to reduce their current-year tax liability, which can be particularly beneficial for startups and companies looking to grow by investing in new equipment. This deduction can be applied to a wide range of assets, including equipment, vehicles, and software, provided they meet the criteria outlined in Section 179... --- - Published: 2023-09-12 - Modified: 2024-01-30 - URL: https://console.4riversequipment.com/big-dig-colorado-raises-over-146000-for-pediatric-cancer-research/ LONGMONT, Colo. – 4Rivers Equipment is proud to share the success of the Big Dig Colorado event presented by IHC Scott, a family-friendly large equipment festival that raises funds for pediatric cancer research. In March, 4Rivers Equipment played a significant role in helping the school receive accreditation from the AED Foundation. The AED Foundation is a non-profit organization for the heavy equipment industry that works to improve the availability and quality of heavy equipment industry employees. The high school accreditation program recognizes the hard work invested into the next generation of technicians and helps facilitate the pipeline from these high schools into dealer programs or post-secondary education. In fact, it’s the first of its kind delivered to a 4Rivers Equipment customer. Headquartered in Colorado Springs, Seth has been a partner of 4Rivers Equipment for many years. His first impression of his new machine? “The controls are awesome! Everything looks really clean, factory-integrated,” Seth responded. Seth will be using this excavator on its first job, to dig basements, at a new subdivision in Colorado Springs. Seth is confident this machine will increase their productivity and allow them to complete their digs quicker than with a conventional setup, using rotating lasers and laser detectors. “The does it one time, it takes me 3 or 4 passes ,” says Seth. He went on to add, “... an operator spends 10 minutes checking grade, typically they’re checking grade 2 or 3 times per hole. ” Reducing passes from 3 to 4 down to 1, and reducing time spent checking grade by 30 minutes per hole impacts his production, and his bottom line. Seth’s company has utilized technology in their operation since 2003. “I’ve always been a technology buff, I like technology,” Seth said when asked why he first started working with technology. But beyond that, he feels that “You cannot beat a computer, bottom line. ” Seth has spent years refining his skills as an operator, it’s not as if he’s an apprentice. After completing his training at Southeast Community College from the John Deere Tech program in Milford, NE, he recently joined the Frederick, CO team. "My journey to 4Rivers was pretty unexpected," stated Fischer. Growing up being a large equipment technician is not where he saw himself; it's close, though. He thought that he wanted to be an automotive mechanic. "From a young age, I had always loved cars and wanted to know how they worked. I grew up thinking I was going to be an automotive engineer of some sort," said Fischer. He grew up in Colorado in the Arvada area, being fascinated by cars and how they worked. Unfortunately, his high school didn't have any clubs that included the automotive world, so he didn't get experience until he got his own. After graduating high school, Nicholas attended Red Rocks Community College in Lakewood, intending to transfer to the School of Mines in Golden. "After a year and half of classes, I took a break. This time period coincided with my job search, and the rest is history," said Fischer. He previously worked at a lumber yard in Commerce City and would occasionally get the chance to work on equipment with his supervisor, and he enjoyed every chance he got. Through some research and friend help, he found that John Deere was the way he wanted to go. To tell if your current machine is equipped with GPS grade control, check for 2 "vibe poles" that look sort of like a wide antenna pole in a fixed mount position on the outside of the machine; usually in the front. You will also have a GPS touchscreen monitor inside the cab; usually on the armrest. The key to keeping your grade control system working properly is proper maintenance. Followed are some tips and tricks to help keep your 3D Machine Control system in tip-top shape. Move GPS antennas and touchscreen daily while keeping it safe and secure in its case overnight. Coil cables from machine to antenna: ensure it's properly fastened to the pole as they are expensive to replace. Secure ends properly so they don't pull frequently on the ends and break/fray. Keep the files on the machine touchscreen limited. Delete old jobs that aren't needed any longer. There's only so much space available before it starts slowing down the performance. Regular firmware updates will help with system performance. Always have a USB flash drive available for easy transfer of data. This story begins with our great customer at Ultrasonic Guided Wave Construction out of Fort Morgan, Colorado. Also known as US-Hydro, Ultrasonic Guided Wave performs services such as pipe inspections and installations, hydro/mechanical excavations, reclamation, and construction all over the country. They do all of their own work which means there are no sub-contractors and they handle jobs ranging from small potholing jobs to large-scale excavations. When they're owner, Dalton Krehmeyer, said he wanted an excavator with full machine grade control, he came to the 4Rivers Equipment 4Sight Solutions team to help him out. However, this wasn't just any ole' normal request; rather, this request was a bit unique for the 4Sight Solutions team. The request was for a John Deere excavator with full grade control capability, but the unique part was that Ultrasonic Guided Wave wanted it on a John Deere 135G excavator; which was thought to be impossible because of the small size of the excavator. So when the 4Sight Solutions team sat down to begin planning the installation of the X-53x Auto excavator system, they first thought it couldn't be done. Just to be sure, Mike Sydow with 4Sight Solutions reached out to Topcon to see what they thought about doing a major project like this and to see... --- - Published: 2020-09-08 - Modified: 2023-01-05 - URL: https://console.4riversequipment.com/topcon-base-rover/ Topcon Base & Rover The Topcon Base & Rover is the foundation of any grade control system.
